As they do a setup with the purchase, I voiced my concerns and they took it to their luthier… after 20-30 minutes, I plugged it in again and the issues were gone. Then I noticed two issues that made me worry: a slight crackling sound when switching to the middle pickup, and chords sounding out of tune going up the neck. (I have a set of JB pickups for the neck or both that I could use as a possible replacement.) Plugged in, the bridge pickup especially had great character. The Epiphone had a singing quality before I plugged it in, and it has incredible action. To me, the pricier guitar felt completely stiff and unresponsive. Now, a guitar’s sound is 95% in the player’s hands, and what doesn’t resonate with one player might be the perfect match for another. Being weary of common budget guitar issues, I decided to also - for pure testing purposes - try out a $5,000 Gibson (so overpriced!) and took both to the testing room. My drummer husband went hi hat-shopping at Chicago Music Exchange and I, who still would like to have a good humbucker guitar without spending a fortune, spotted this CME-exclusive “transparent cherry” Epiphone Les Paul in the store. Have I lucked out this time? I dare to think so. Les’ first solidbody guitar, nicknamed “the Log”, would go on to inspire the Les Paul Standard, what many consider the greatest electric guitar ever made.Ĭontrols: 2- Volume, 2- Tone CTS electronicsĭescription & Specs This Epiphone Les Paul Standard '60s comes in a CME Exclusive Maple Burst Fade finish.
